The Vertical Split Screen Design Trend

One Device Window, Many Messages
Using the split screen design technique not only shows that you as a designer are on the cutting edge of the latest trends, but that you are also thinking about the message and the optimal approach to make an impact on the consumer. In my experience, that is a designer you want to keep around. Before getting into too much detail on the topic of split screens and showcasing examples of the technique in practice, let's get some of the basics out of the way first.

What is a split screen?

A design pattern that displays two vertical panels that are directly adjacent to one another (on the desktop). On mobile devices, split screen designers that are responsive will stack one on top of the other in a vertical fashion.

I'll admit it, I grew up alongside the Internet revolution, but can still recall life without the constant connectivity of Web and mobile phones and apps. More importantly, I can remember Web design when digital was still a nascent, largely experimental medium for most brands and marketers.

Before and After: Transforming Email Design with the 3 P's

One of the hottest trends on social media today is publishing before-and-after photos. Hashtags like #TransformationTuesday and #ThrowbackThursday often accompany pictures on social that show dramatic before-and-after improvements of people, places and, yes, even things (perhaps even an email template).

If marketers want to craft compelling, memorable campaigns that cut through the noise and transform the email marketing experience, chances are a digital makeover is in order. By capturing a few old emails and optimizing them for the three P's of email, seeing genuine improvements with a before-and-after makeover has never been easier.

When building software the first thing we have to think about is the user experience.

Feature-rich software has failed against user-optimized experiences time and time again. You only have to think of Apple's iPod to realize the truth of this statement. Microsoft Zune was, by all measures a better device, with better software, and more functionality. Designing and developing software is about creating a usable software product. Usability is more important than functionality. We've seen examples of this time and time again.

Key Concepts in Designing & Optimizing for Conversion

Web professionals have very different definitions of the term "optimization" based on their daily responsibilities.

For managers of digital advertising campaigns, for example, optimization may mean finding opportunities to increase click-through rates or reduce total spend, while those responsible for the organic search marketing channel may concentrate their optimization efforts on developing content around around a theme relevant/related to the enterprise or engaging in outreach to acquire links/citations in order to improve search results page placement and position.

Neither of theses definitions is wrong, of course, but it's obvious that based on your own responsibilities, optimization is going to mean something different for each and every one of us. It becomes even more complicated for those whose responsibility is optimizing for something as broad and far-reaching as conversion.
